Advocacy

HREIB coordinates and participates in events to raise awareness about the human rights situation in Burma at local, national, regional, and international levels.

Universal Periodic Review

Included in HREIB’s advocacy efforts was work done in 2010 towards the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR), where the human rights performance off all UN member states is periodically reviewed. HREIB Coordinated a network of civil society organizations to submit a joint report for Burma’s UPR review, held in Geneva in January 2011. Members of this network travelled to Geneva for the review, and returned in June for the follow up.

Child Rights

With regards to advocacy work carried out in support for child rights, HREIB has contributed in a number of campaigns. HREIB submitted a Shadow Report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) with the aim of strengthening the ability of local child rights organizations, including youth groups, from Burma to engage with the international human rights system. HREIB also conducted an advocacy mission with the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers in New York, presenting a report to the UN Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict. In addition, HREIB, along with several regional partners, conducted an advocacy campaign targeting the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC). HREIB led the CRC Regional Working Group and encourage ACWC to address issues already identified by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
